Generally, there are 3 common shapes of coffee filters, namely cone filters, disc filters and basket filters.
『Conical filter』
The cone coffee filter has a cone-shaped bottom and a large opening at the top.
It has standardized different sizes ranging from 1-6, and the higher the number, the more cups of coffee it can filter.
This shape of coffee filter is believed to provide the best coffee-water contact and is considered the most effective coffee extraction.
Therefore, it is most popular among professional home coffee brewers and is often used for hand-poured and cold brewed coffee.
『Disc filter』
They are flat discs, usually made of metal.
Compared to other shapes, disc coffee filters are one of the smallest coffee filters.
However, it does not have an exact size like other filters, but depends on the size of the coffee machine required.
This shape is often used in AeroPress coffee machines or as an alternative filter for French press coffee pots.
『Basket filter』
It is shaped like a basket with a wide opening at the top, which is usually larger than the bottom, and the bottom is also characterized by being flat.
Although mainly made of paper, they are also made of metal.
However, many people believe that this type of filter does not meet the needs of optimal coffee extraction because they do not allow maximum contact between coffee and water.
Therefore, this type of coffee filter is mostly used in automatic coffee machines.
